ADIRONDACK CHAIRS

When searching for Adirondack chairs and furniture you should be aware that not all Adirondack furniture is crafted from teak wood.  In fact, you may be surprised to learn that you can find Adirondack furniture created from teak wood, pine, and cypress wood as well as from synthetic woods and plastics known as poly-woods.

Adirondack chairs are also known as Muskoka chairs and were originally designed in 1903 by Thomas Lee.  According to several stories, Mr. Lee wanted outdoor chairs for his Westport, New York summer home and after many attempts came up with the popular Adirondack design.  However, Thomas Lee called his chair the “Westport plank chair.”  Thomas Lee showed, or gave his plans to Harry Bunnel who was a friend and carpenter.  Bunnell filed for and received a patent for his “Westport Chairs,” in 1905.  It is unknown if Bunnell had permission form Thomas Lee.  All of Bunnell’s Westport Chairs were all signed and crafted from hemlock.

Over the years, the design of Mr. Lee’s chairs has changed very little.  Today’s Adirondack chairs often feature a rounded back and contoured seat.  Thomas Lee’s popular design has translated today into other pieces of furniture, including tables, gliders, settees and much more.

In the hundred years since Thomas Lee first designed his Westport plank chair, the Adirondack chair has become extremely popular for outdoor patios, and gardens especially since the wide, flat armrests are perfect for when there isn’t any tables to use to place food and beverages on.  The main improvement to Mr. Lee’s design is what the chairs are crafted, instead of hemlock, today Adirondack chairs are constructed from many different types of materials.

Teakwood is superb natural material, as it is the most durable, ensuring you a lift time of use.  Another material you may want to consider especially if your Adirondack chairs will be for public use is synthetic wood, which is marketed under many different names including Poly-Wood.  Synthetic wood is a wood and plastic resin and is mildew, color fade, and graffiti resistant.  This innovative material is perfect for both businesses as well as private use.  For over a century, the simple design of the Adirondack chair has proven to be both comfortable as well as practical.  If you are considering outdoor furniture for your home or business, then take a closer look at Adirondack furniture.
